I thought the same thing actually. There are differences, but there were A LOT of similarities. Not enough for me to go, "COPY", but enough to think back to Short Circuit and Johnny 5.
Boy, if only there was an R-rated Short Circuit. Not that the originals were bad, but just a comedic or maybe more violent approach would also be cool. Great movie(s) though.
